Kindergarten Registration

To enroll your child into kindergarten, he/she must be 5 years of age on or before August 31st.   You may register at the school in your district by taking your child and the following records to the school:

1. Birth Certificate

2. Shot Record

Within 30 calendar days of their first enrollment date, all students shall have completed or have started the course of immunizations for each of the following:

5 doses -Diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough. A booster dose must be on or after the fourth birthday and BEFORE enrolling in school (K-1) for the first time.

4 doses -Polio vaccine. A booster dose must be on or after the fourth birthday and BEFORE enrolling in school (K-1) for the first time.

2 doses of live vaccine – MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). The first dose must be on or after the first birthday, and the second dose BEFORE entering school (K-1) for the first time.

Haemophilus influenza (Hib) Required if not five years old yet. Series complete if at least one (1) dose given on or after 15 months of age.

Hepatitis B (HepB)– 3 doses required.

Varicella vaccine – Two doses administered at least 28 days apart.

  1. One dose is required on or after 12 months of age and before 19 months.
  2. A second dose is required before entering school for the first time. Must be at least 28 days after the 1st dose. 
  3. Documentation of disease must be from a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant verifying history of Varicella disease. Documentation must include the name of the individual with the history of the disease, approximate date or age of infection and a healthcare provider’s signature.

Principals are required to refuse admittance to any child whose parent or guardian does not present a medical certification of proper immunizations within the allotted time unless the child qualifies for a medical or religious exemption to the immunization requirement pursuant to Policy JGCB.

4. Copy of the child’s physical exam

Kindergarten Health Assessments are required for all children entering kindergarten. Each item listed on the Health Assessment Form must be completed by the physician. These items include: immunizations, weight, height, blood pressure, vision, hearing, developmental screening, and health information. The assessment shall be made no more than 12 months prior to the date of school entry. The parent, guardian, or responsible person shall have 30 calendar days from the first day of attendance to present the required health assessment transmittal form for the child. Upon termination of 30 calendar days, the principal shall not permit the child to attend the school until the required health assessment transmittal form has been submitted.

5. Proof of Parent/Guardian Address

Parents can use one of the following documents for proof of residency: mortgage or lease agreement, water, power, or gas bill.

Transferring into Cumberland County Schools from another school district:

 You should take your child to the school in your district and present the following records to the school:

 1. Withdrawal from previous school or copy of last report card

 2. Birth Certificate

 3. Shot record

 4. Photo ID of Parent/Guardian

 5. Proof of Parent/Guardian Address – Parents can use one of the following documents for proof of residency: mortgage or lease agreement, water, power, or gas bill.

Transferring into North Carolina schools for the first time:

Follow all guidelines in the above section. One additional requirement it a school physical. Any child new to North Carolina schools is now required to have a current school physical no matter what grade the child is in. 

Transferring from one Cumberland County school to another school within the county:

 If you have moved into a new district:

 You must withdraw from your current school, and take the withdrawal form to the new school to register.  You must also show proof of your address.

 Hardship Transfers (Special Assignment):

 Parent/Guardian must complete a Special Assignment Request Form and submit it to the Planning & Student Assignment Office.   The request will be reviewed by the appropriate Associate Superintendent.   The final decision will be based on:

1. Physical Handicap of the Student

 2. Mental Handicap of the Student

 3. Emotional Handicap of the Student

 4. Extenuating circumstances stated by parent

 5. Enrollment and growth potential of the schools involved.
